Saw this movie ‘A Wednesday’ yesterday… amazing movie, very well-made, with a great message! The movie is very well-paced and hence, keeps you glued to the seat from beginning till the end. I don’t think there’s even a single frame which is not required! No melodrama, no blood baths, no dances & no songs… only one good story with some fabulous actors at their best! The narrator has very nicely shown the perspective of the authorities as well as the frustration of ‘the stupid common man’. I wish one such common man comes out in reality as well as stir the system… but on a more practical note.. easier said than done! Ain’t all of us one of those millions ‘coward’ common men who are just silent spectators of all the bullshit happening around? Ain’t we more worried about the petty fight with our partner than the wars between nations? Yes, we sure are!
Anyhow, lets come to the question… who is the so-called ‘common man’?
Was talking to a friend today and he asked me who is a common man? To be very honest, I was not very sure but I said its probably someone who doesn’t have ‘the power’. He said that according to its literal meaning, it should be the kind of people who hold a majority in the country. In India, the majority is in villages doing farming… so are they the common men and we the middle class or are we the common men and they the poor class or are both common? I still stood by my point that it should be someone who doesn’t have powers or any titles. So, for instance, Mukesh Ambani may not have a ‘title’ but he has much more power than most of the people holding titles. And so, he’s not a common man. Another parameter could be money… coz money again brings power along!
What do you say?
Hi,
I would say a common man is someone who primarily lives to ensure a good life for himself and his family without getting unduly concerned about what happens in the socio-political environment around him.
I think it would be wrong to classify him as being rich or poor as both can be the common man. Probably the effects of the any mishappenings around the common man may get shielded better if he has more money to fall back upon, but ultimately both the rich and poor bear the brunt of a situation they have not contributed to.
Thats why I think you are spot on when you say that a common man is a powerless guy, one who tries to manage his personal priorities despite the circumstances around him. He probably has oodles of patience in him. However, if he manages to lose it, he would cease to be a ‘common man’.
Hi Raman… pretty well said I must say!
Am quite new to your blog…impressive posts!!…Keep the good work going.
I was just replying to this topic, but my reply went so long, that thought of adding this topic in blog. Basically I still don’t know who is common man, and also this types of movies and real life events, bring so much anger and guilt(b’coz I myself not doing anything fruitful).
I hope my blog entry would give some more details…
Raman – Thanks for your time and appreciation
Veekaas – Yeah right… none of us is doing anything but for cribbing!
Hats off…
for forcing people to think deep within themselves.
I haven’t seen the movie yet…but will do so soon just to find out the defination of common man.
You have actually left me thinking about who the common man would be…probably you, me or all of us or maybe atleast some of us.
Keep writing!!!
Hardik Shah
Thanks for the appreciation Hardik!
I agree with you totally. A great movie with a very tight script. No time for recluse. Neeraj Pandey has done it right in his first movie. The lot of the common Indian is no different. they are equally frustated with the horrible thing called terrorism and the barbarous terrorists.
Welcome Dipu and thanks for agreeing
